Whitmer says Trump encourages division in our country.
Donald Trump is unsure if the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was real.
On Tuesday at a Michigan rally, the president addressed the crowd and said he wasn’t sure if the kidnapping plot was real but he boasted about how federal agents were able to defuse the situation quickly, per The Hill.
“I’m the one, it was our people that helped her out with her problem,” said Trump. “I mean, we’ll have to see if it’s a problem, right? People are entitled to say maybe it was a problem maybe it wasn’t.”
The President is known for criticizing Whitmer who enforced strict coronavirus restrictions back in the spring in order to contain the virus. And earlier this month, alleged Trump supporters were accused of organizing a plot to kidnap the governor but federal agents were able to intervene.
“It was our people — my people, our people — that helped her out,” Trump said. “And then she blamed me for it. She blamed me. And it was our people that helped her. I don’t get it. How did you put her there.”
During the Lansing rally, the source says Trump initiated a “lock her up” chant and implied the men involved in the alleged kidnapping are innocent until proven guilty.
Trump responded with, “See, I don’t comment on that because every time if I make just a little bit of a nod, they say ‘the president led them.’”
He followed up with, “I don’t have to lead you.”
Whitmer says Trump is “complicit” in the growth of extremist groups in the US.
In a recent piece for The Atlantic, Whitmer says Trump pushes for division.
“I am not surprised. I have watched the president wedge a deeper divide in our country; refuse to denounce white supremacists on a national debate stage; and launch cruel, adolescent attacks on women like Senator Kamala Harris and public-health leaders like Anthony Fauci. And while I won’t let anything distract me from doing my job as governor, I will not stand back and let the president, or anyone else, put my colleagues and fellow Americans in danger without holding him accountable.”
