Andrew McCabe alleged that many in the FBI were alarmed that Trump wanted James Comey to drop the Russia investigation
On Tuesday, Andrew McCabe, former deputy director of the FBI, said that during the 2017 Russia investigation surrounding President Donald Trump’s relationship with Russian leaders, authorities believed that Trump was “actively seeking to obstruct the inquiry.”
The FBI Director and leader of the investigations at the time was James Comey. McCabe said many within the FBI were alarmed with how the president was urging Comey to drop the investigation – especially when it pertained to Trump’s ally, Michael Flynn, who was said to have had close contact with a Russian ambassador.
Eventually, Comey was fired by Trump who said he did not like how he handled the investigation. It should be noted that Flynn eventually resigned from his job as a foreign agent and plead guilty to lying to the FBI in December 2017.
Many GOP lawmakers and Trump supporters believed that the Russia investigations were politically motivated, but McCabe denied those accusations.
“We didn’t open a case because we intended to stage a coup or overthrow the government… We opened a case to find out how the Russians might be undermining our elections. We opened a case because it was our obligation – our duty – to do so. We did our job,” said McCabe during a Senate panel, according to USA Today.
McCabe also admitted that many investigators in the FBI believed that Trump, “posed a danger to national security.”
After Trump fired Comey, McCabe became acting director of the FBI and he is one of the people recently brought in by the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about whether or not the Russia investigations were legitimate. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe, a 21-year veteran of the FBI, on March 16, 2018.
The president did not take too kindly to the remarks made by McCabe. He forcefully responded on Twitter and alleged that the former FBI director damaged the reputation of the bureau.
“Andrew McCabe was exposed for who he is today in the U.S. Senate. He was totally destroyed – an ignorant fool. The great people of the FBI must make sure that he and his former boss, James Comey, pay the price for what they have done to the reputation of the FBI,” Trump tweeted.
